Mission:

YWCA Lethbridge and District is an organization committed to women and the enhancement of their lives by providing programs and services which empower them, support equality and promote wellness in mind, body, and spirit.

Vision:
To be a community leader committed to collaborative partnerships in provision of accessible prevention, intervention and support programs and services for the enhancement of women's lives.

Values:
Our Values are the fundamental principles and beliefs that provide the foundation for the organization. They provide guidance on how to make decisions, how to view customers and how to treat staff.

  • A Woman's Perspective: Women must be leaders in shaping social and cultural directions in order to achieve equity and equality for all women.
  • Difference and Diversity: In order to achieve social and other forms of justice, we must embrace difference and diversity among people.
  • Community Mindedness: Healthy communities, free from violence, racism and other abuses of power, nurture the whole person. Individuals committed to equity advance the growth of healthy communities.
  • Global Interdependance: The worldwide struggle for equity and equality connects all women.
  • The Whole Person: Strength, wisdom and character come from the balanced development of the whole person in mind, body and spirit.
  • Volunteers: Volunteers are the heart of the YWCA.
  • Accountability: As individuals associated with this organization, we are accountable for the conduct of the organization.

Governance:
YWCA Lethbridge & District is led by a volunteer Board of Directors that follows a Policy Governance Model in order to meet the obligations of the work of the agency. Elected by the voting members of YWCA Lethbridge & District to serve a three-year term, the Board of Directors determines the mission, vision, values and ends of the Association.

History:
YWCA Lethbridge and District evolved when a committee of representatives from local organizations investigated the need for a residence for students and working women in the area. By 1949, a permanent Board of Directors was organized - resulting in the YWCA Lethbridge and District registering as a society in 1951.

More than sixty years has passed since those humble beginnings, and YWCA Lethbridge and District has continued to grow and respond to the needs of the Southern Alberta community. Housing, homelessness, poverty, domestic and sexual violence, health, fitness, volunteerism, youth empowerment, leadership and a place to belong are all addressed at YWCA.

  • A YWCA built and sustained by the community.
  • A YWCA that evolves with the needs and desires of the community.
  • A YWCA that is privileged to serve Southern Alberta.
  • A YWCA that serves more than 6,000 individuals each year.

As a member of YWCA Canada, we share in the history and responsibility of being Canada's oldest and largest women's multi-service organization. Through YWCA Canada, we are connected not only across nine provinces and two territories, but worldwide, uniting 25,000,000 women and girls throughout YWCAs in 125 countries.
